Mahadevan, P. R. (The Rockefeller Institute, New York, N.Y.), and E. L. Tatum. Relationship of the major constituents of the Neurospora crassa cell wall to wild-type and colonial morphology. J. Bacteriol. 90:1073-1081. 1965.-The relationship of cell wall to morphology in Neurospora crassa was studied by correlating the levels of structural polymers of the cell wall with wild-type and colonial morphology. The cell wall of N. crassa contains at least four major complexes: a peptide-polysaccharide complex; two glucose polymers, one of which was found to be a laminarinlike beta-1,3-glucan; and, lastly, chitin. The levels of one or more of these structural polymers are consistently altered in single-gene mutants with colonial growth, and in sorbose-induced colonial growth. The proportions of these polymers, particularly of the peptide-polysaccharide complex and the beta-1,3-glucan, appear to be important to morphology.

Biotransformation of Hydrocortisone by Neurospora crassa
The ability of Neurospora crassa FGSC 4335 in the biotransformation of hydrocortisone was investigated. The microorganism produced two major metabolites after incubation with the substrate for seven days. Each microbial product was purified chromatographically and identified on the basis of spectral data. The products were identified as 11?,17?,20?,21-tetrahydroxypregn-4-en-3-one (II) and 11?-h...
متن کاملMutational analysis of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor pathway demonstrates that GPI-anchored proteins are required for cell wall biogenesis and normal hyphal growth in Neurospora crassa.
Using mutational and proteomic approaches, we have demonstrated the importance of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor pathway for cell wall synthesis and integrity and for the overall morphology of the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa. Mutants affected in the gpig-1, gpip-1, gpip-2, gpip-3, and gpit-1 genes, which encode components of the N. crassa GPI anchor biosynthetic pathway,...
متن کاملSensitivity of Neurospora crassa to a Marine-Derived Aspergillus tubingensis Anhydride Exhibiting Antifungal Activity That Is Mediated by the MAS1 Protein
The fungus Aspergillus tubingensis (strain OY907) was isolated from the Mediterranean marine sponge Ircinia variabilis. Extracellular extracts produced by this strain were found to inhibit the growth of several fungi. Among the secreted extract components, a novel anhydride metabolite, tubingenoic anhydride A (1) as well as the known 2-carboxymethyl-3-hexylmaleic acid anhydride, asperic acid, a...
متن کاملMOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF THE SULFUR REGULATORY CIRCUIT OF NEUROSPORA CRASSA
The sulfur regulatory circuit of the filamentous fungus, Neurospora crassa, consists of a set of unlinked structural genes which encode sulfur catabolic and two major regulatory genes which govern their expression. The cys-3 regulatory gene encode a transacting regulatory protein which activates the expression of cys-14 and ars, whereas the other regulatory genes Scon-l and Scon-2 appear to...
متن کاملEffect of L-sorbose on polysaccharide synthetases of Neurospora crassa (glycogen- -1,3-glucan-morphology-cell wall-digitonin-particulate enzymes).
Neurospora glycogen synthetase (EC 2.4.1.11) occurs in 100,000 x g particles. The two forms (glucose-6-phosphate dependent-independent) of glycogen synthetase were solubilized and separated by digitonin treatment of the 100,000 x g particles. Glucan synthetase activity of Neurospora was found only in a cell-wall preparation. These two enzymes have been characterized in relation to the paramorph...
